What We Know About This Town.
Hauppauge straddles the Town of Smithtown and Town of Islip boundary, roughly along Motor Parkway. About 20,000 residents, plus the Hauppauge Industrial Park — one of the largest industrial parks on the East Coast.
Residential Hauppauge is a mix of 1950s–70s colonials and split-levels east of Veterans Highway, older homes north of 25 toward Smithtown, and newer infill construction that's been filling in since the 1990s. The industrial park runs along Adams Avenue and the expressway — mostly commercial and light industrial with its own sanitary infrastructure.
Most of residential Hauppauge is on private disposal. The industrial park is largely sewered. If you're in a house and you're not sure, call us — we'll check with SCDHS.
What We Hit When We Dig.
Hauppauge sits on Central Suffolk outwash soils. For most of the residential area, it's sandy loam over gravel with good drainage:
- Sandy loam, mostly clean — fast digging, conventional equipment, no surprises
- Good to excellent percolation — standard leach ring designs usually work
- Moderate water table — typically 8–14 feet in residential sections; deeper in upland areas
- Rock: Occasional fieldstone in the northern residential section, none of the continuous rocky moraine you see in Huntington or Smithtown Village
- Industrial park: Mixed conditions depending on lot; some sites have old fill or compaction from prior use — we do a site look before committing to a price on commercial work
Article 6 — Two Town Options.
Hauppauge straddles Smithtown and Islip. Depending on which side of Motor Parkway your property sits on:
- Town of Smithtown review: Covers the northern residential section. Smithtown is organized and quick — turnaround on permits usually 6–8 weeks
- Town of Islip review: Covers the southern section toward Brentwood. Islip reviews run 6–10 weeks
- SCDHS Article 6: Both sides go through SCDHS main intake in Hauppauge (literally down the road from our shop)
- Industrial park jobs: Commercial sanitary permits run on their own timeline depending on scope — plan review, engineering signoffs, SCDHS engineering review
Being local helps. We have an established relationship with the Hauppauge SCDHS office. Our applications don't sit in the pile; we follow up and know the inspectors by name.
$20,000–$30,000 Available to Most Hauppauge Homeowners.
Most of residential Hauppauge qualifies for the SCSIP (Suffolk County Septic Improvement Program) base-tier grant: $20,000 toward an I/A (Innovative/Alternative) nitrogen-reducing system.
Parts of southern Hauppauge — particularly near the Nissequogue River headwaters and Connetquot feeder streams — may qualify for the enhanced $30,000 grant. We check each address before filing.
We've processed 180+ SCSIP applications since 2017, with a 97%+ approval rate. We know what Nassau and SCDHS reviewers want, which forms to use, and how to write the application narrative.
For most Hauppauge homeowners, the grant covers most or all of the cost difference between a conventional cesspool and an I/A system. Full details: SCSIP Grant Guide.
